How do I choose drug addiction treatment?
Choosing drug and alcohol rehabilitation does not have to be a difficult task. If a family organizes and hires a professional interventionist, the intervention specialist would help the family select a treatment center. Family intervention groups work with numerous treatment providers across the nation and are familiar with various programs. It is important to select a drug rehab center that meets the treatment needs of the person attending the program. Interventionists would help a family determine the method of treatment and place them in contact with treatment providers within their state or other states. This is an excellent resource to utilize because of how knowledgeable interventionist are about treatment and rehabilitation.
Other options for selecting drug rehabilitation involve an addiction assessment, which could be done over the phone or in-person. The purpose of an addiction assessment is to determine the extent of addiction and what rehabilitation options are available. Qualified addiction specialists and counselor perform these assessments and it benefits the family and the addict. Because there are a vast number of drug rehabilitation treatment resources within the United States, extra help alleviates the confusion of searching online endlessly for treatment. However, when a family does search online for drug rehabilitation they would come across an addiction treatment referral site. These are websites with access to extensive directories of all the available drug rehabilitation resources in each state, county, and even city.
The first step in the rehabilitation process is detox and this is done to control withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Detoxification options usually includes medically supervised detox and withdrawal management and conventional detox services. Typically, the severity of addiction and accompanying withdrawal symptoms determines what method of detox is needed. Detox alone does not cure addiction and addicts or their families should not rely on detox to manage every aspect of the drug addiction. The next phase of rehabilitation is selecting an inpatient or outpatient drug treatment center. Outpatient drug rehabilitation is effective but does require significant commitment. The patient is not living at the facility and is required to attend treatment daily.
Residential drug rehabilitation programs are either short-term or long-term and the severity of addiction determines what length of time is required. Short-term drug rehabilitation programs usually last three to six weeks, whereas long-term programs provide services for three to six months or more. Overall, the rehabilitation process should help a person physically and mentally and return them to the individual they were before the addiction took over. According to an Annual Surveillance Report of Drug-Related Risks and Outcomes, in 2016, 2,181,000 persons or 0.8% of persons aged 12 and older reported that they had received illicit or prescription drug treatment in the past year. Also, in 2016, 1,406,000 persons or 0.5% of persons aged 12 and older, reported that they had received illicit or prescription drug treatment in the past year at a specialty facility.
