COCAINE/CRACK FAQS

Is an intervention for crack cocaine or cocaine addiction different from other interventions?

The family intervention process is the same, but the interventionist helps the family plan the intervention specifically for crack cocaine or a cocaine addiction. An intervention is an important event created by the family and friends of the person struggling with addiction. Family intervention is a carefully planned process with the help of a professional interventionist. Intervention for cocaine addiction, like any other intervention, focuses on the positive and does blame or attack the addict by demonstrating how the treatment is beneficial.

There are many different steps involved with professional intervention, and the first one is getting help from a professional interventionist. Contacting certified interventionists ensure the family can organize the intervention effectively and help their loved one access treatment. Another step is forming the intervention team, which is the core group of organizers, including the interventionist. Generally, these are people who are not antagonistic towards the addict but keep a level head during the intervention.

When working with a professional interventionist, a plan is developed the first day is spent planning the entirety of the intervention. During this time, the family is writing impact statements, rehearsing the intervention, and organizing the treatment. The first step in treating crack cocaine or cocaine addiction is detox. The detoxification process addresses the withdrawal symptoms and cravings before the person begins counseling and therapy. Detox is necessary and cannot be avoided, and it should not be considered the only treatment approach. Detox programs do not provide adequate counseling and support to treat underlying issues.

The next phase of rehabilitation involves attending inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation. Residential rehabilitation is the best option for someone addicted to cocaine or crack cocaine. Inpatient programs offer extensive counseling and therapy services providing various methodologies. An addiction assessment would help the family and addict determine what type of counseling or therapy is needed. Some addicts benefit from traditional approaches, whereas others benefit from a non-traditional treatment like experiential therapy.

Cocaine and crack cocaine are dangerous drugs causing devastating addiction. According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, among people aged 12 or older, the percentage who were pasty year cocaine users decreased from 2.5% in 2002 to 2% in 2019. The percentage of past year crack cocaine users in 2019 was lower than the percentages in 2002. Well-rounded rehabilitation is necessary, and the process should include an assessment, detox, inpatient treatment, and aftercare support.
