When a loved one is addicted to drugs or alcohol it affects the whole family. Sometimes when it comes to alcohol it takes the family to step in and hold an intervention before the loved one understands that their drinking has become a problem.

This is because drinking is so normalized within our everyday lives. Around 86.4 percent of Americans over 18 admit that they drank alcohol in the past year.  We’ve put together a drug and alcohol intervention guide to help you and your family through.

Getting Help for Your Loved One

Making the decision to plan an intervention is never an easy one. Odds are your loved one doesn’t think they have a problem with drugs and alcohol, and they won’t be too pleased with you.

However, his or her life is at stake if they stay on the path they are on now. Know that you are doing the right thing and regardless of the outcome you will have a positive impact on your loved one.

What is an Intervention?

During an intervention, the family and friends of the addicted person will get together to help the addicted loved one see that they need help.

An intervention is a safe place for you and your loved ones to share concerns in a constructive way. It’s your opportunity to tell your loved one how their actions are affecting them, you and the family negatively.

If what you are saying comes off as judgmental or accusatory, your loved one is going to shut down and stop listening. Since the goal is to guide them to the understanding that they need to get treatment if they stop listening it could ruin the whole process.

Only round 1 out of 10 people who need specialty addiction treatment actually receive it, the goal of the intervention is to make sure your loved one is the one that gets it.

How You Can Prepare

There are quite a few things you can do to prepare for the intervention. First things first you are going to want to hire an interventionalist.

This person is going to make sure that the process stays constructive and your loved one is as receptive as possible.

You will also want to make sure that everyone who is planning on being there meets with the interventionalist. They will explain how the process will work and how to write out the statements that your family will make.

Find a neutral place, that way your loved one will feel more comfortable and relaxed before it starts. The professional can help you with this as well.

You will also need to find a treatment center that can take your loved one in the event that they decide to go. After they choose to get treatment. You can’t waste any time if you do they have the opportunity to change their mind.
